Jenny Nelson, 2016 Outstanding Senior in French

Jenny Nelson, AATF Oustanding Senior in French, with her parents.
At the departmental recital for French and Chinese, Dr. Susan Myers had the privilege of announcing the AATF Oustanding Senior in French Award to Jenny Nelson, majoring in Elementary Education and French. The criteria for the American Association of Teachers of French include scholastic achievement as evidenced by an outstanding GPA average in French and overall GPA average and commitment to the language. Jenny manifested her commitment to excellence in French through membership and participation in Phi Sigma Iota, the international foreign language honor society, twice taking a leadership role in the induction ceremony, and through completion of a fieldwork assignment at the French immersion school, l'Académie Lafayette and a corresponding independent study entitled "L'Académie Lafayette: Une étude de la communication interculturelle." In this study, Jenny observed pedagogical approaches that differed between the immersion experience and a non-immersion experience, approaches to teaching language to young children. She also participated in intercultural communication through her interactions with the students and teachers of the Académie Lafayette. Her reflections on this experience can be found in the blog post. Jenny received a certificate and medal from the AATF in recognition of her achievement.
